Vine bridges (Kazurabashi)
Once, long time ago, the Iya Valley had 13 suspension bridges which were build out of vines (Kazurabashi). These bridges were important for people to bring goods safely to the other side of the Iya-gawa River. A few of these bridges still exist.
Famous are the so called “couple” bridges because these are located almost side by side hidden deep down the valley across the river. They are known as the Oku-Iya Kazurabashi (奥祖 谷 二 重 か ず ら 橋). The largest of these two bridges is called the Husband Bridge (Otto no Hashi), which is 44 meters in length and stands next to a small waterfall. The slightly smaller Wife Bridge (Tsuma no Hashi) is 22 meters long and is a little further upstream.
Another rope bridge can be found along road #32
Due to security nowadays these bridges in the Iya Valley are reinforced with steel cables and rebuilt every three years. Yet still worth a visit. A ticket to go across these bridge will cost you about € 4 then you walk at an altitude of 14 meters above the Iya-gawa river.
How to get there
The couple bridges are located along road #439 between Nagoro (Village of the Dolls) and Mnt Tsurugi. There is a large parkinglot available, Walk down the mountain until you reach the ticket booth.
